Supplement Mania - Greendrinks - Multivitamins

Your #1 Source for multivitamins Information

You may already realize that our fast-food society doesn't get all the vitamins and minerals we need to live in optimal health each day. But did you know that the nutrient content of the fruits and vegetables you do eat every day is far less than the same nutrient content of the same foods was fifty years ago?

There are many possible causes, from soil erosion to genetically engineered plants, but the only real solution at this point is to take a multivitamin supplement each day to insure you get an adequate supply of essential vitamins and minerals. This is especially true if you are pregnant.

Be careful of many supplements out there that provide mega-doses of some vitamins. While in most cases high doses of water-soluble vitamins are not known to be harmful (except for B-6), they are simply filtered out. At the very least it is a waste of money. If you do choose a supplement with high dosages of most vitamins, you may take less than the prescribed amount (2 capsules instead of 4), or spread them out throughout the day.

If you want a complete multi-vitamin that has everything but the kitchen sink, then this is the one for you. It provides all of your essential vitamins and minerals, plus it has the super greens antioxidant blend with over 10,000 ORAC of antioxidants (that’s a whole heck of a lot). This is a product with strictly controlled purity standards and a carefully engineered nutrient blend.

I do actually use this product myself every day. My only criticism is that I feel it has a little too much of certain vitamins in it. Do I really need 5000% of the recommend daily value of B-12? Probably not. So because I also take their Triple Greens powder, I personally only take 2 of the 4 capsules in a serving most days. If I feel like I’m fighting off a cold or have some other reason to want to boost my vitamin intake, then I’ll take all 4 pills, usually in two separate doses.

This product really does have everything, from ginkgo biloba to CoQ10. Actually the one thing it doesn’t have is Iron. That’s a good thing, because it’s best you get your iron from dietary sources rather than a supplement (too much iron can cause problems).

So if you want to get all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients you need all in one single source, then this is a great option. Best of all, you can get a full bottle for free. You just pay shipping and handling (less than $5). I personally recommend this product along with the Triple Greens powder each day.

Purity Products Perfect Multi Super Greens

Opti-men is another multivitamin for men that includes a full set of vitamins and minerals, plus several extras. This one contains a broader spectrum of phytonutrients and antioxidants than NOW Adam but less than Purity’s Perfect Multi. I would rank this one in between the two.

This one also contains an amino acid blend, that’s partly essential aminos and some non-essential. I’m not sure what the target of this blend is exactly, but this is probably because if you don’t eat meat or don’t take any sort of protein supplement, but perhaps not necessary if you get enough dietary protein.

I like the fact this one has antioxidant and immune components, but they aren’t very clear as to how much of each thing is in there. It’s all lumped together in their proprietary blend. That makes it difficult to judge the potency of these particular portions of the supplement.

Opti-Men Opti-Women

This is Optimum’s women’s multivitamin. It is actually much more similar to NOW Eve than Opti-Men is to Now Adam. This is another female-targeted vitamin and mineral supplement that contains a small amount of iron. This one has a much smaller immune and antioxidant component compared to the men’s version, and they are labeled in very different ways. Opti-Women also contains far lower quantities of several vitamins.

I like the fact that NOW Eve has spirulina in it, but otherwise these two are pretty close. I like that Opti-Women has less B6 in it… That’s the one B-vitamin you can get too much of (it can cause nerve damage in persistent high doses). The two are very similar in price.

I still recommend Purity’s Perfect Multi over any of the others (did I mention the free trial offer?), but it’s a toss up between Now Eve and Opti-Women. I think it really is going to depend on your goals and what other supplements you plan to take.

Opti-Men Opti-Women

NOW Adam is a relatively inexpensive, well-rounded vitamin for men.  It’s got a good mix of vitamins and minerals, plus a few extras such as CoQ10, Ginkgo Biloba, ginseng, calcium, and saw palmetto extract. They’ve done a decent job of eliminating some excesses, but the product still has a high B-vitamin content.

It is also an iron-free product (again, that’s a good thing).

NOW Adam Superior Men's Multi

This is the women’s version of the NOW multivitamin. It’s very similar to NOW Adam, but formulated for women. It does contain iron and a rather different mix of phytonutrients, including spirulina and royal jelly. Much like NOW Adam, it is an inexpensive way to get a comprehensive multivitamin with a little more than just your basic vitamins.
